Attempts to turn Tripura into Manipur: Congress condemns conspiracy, demands action

Agartala, 23rd July 2024:  A fiery situation in Gandacherra has raised concerns about communal harmony, with the Congress party accusing a section of staging a deep conspiracy. Despite the gravity of the situation, Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, and State Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan have yet to take any action.

The Congress, however, has stepped forward to support the hundreds of families affected by the unrest in Gandacherra. A delegation of four Congress members attempted to visit the area but faced police obstacles in Amarpur on Monday. Surprisingly, they were denied entry despite obtaining permission from the District Magistrate. The police cited Section 163 as the reason for their obstruction, which prohibits gatherings of more than five people. The Congress alleges that this denial was part of a deliberate conspiracy.

Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha addressed the media at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan on Tuesday, expressing concern over the situation. He accused the present government of attempting to rule Tripura in a manner similar to Manipur through covert actions. Saha emphasized that the Congress would not allow such a transformation to occur.

Saha also highlighted the plight of affected families. Many have lost their livelihoods, and there is currently inadequate infrastructure to support them. Despite assurances from the state government regarding compensation, families have received a maximum of only ₹25,000. The Congress demands full accountability and cooperation from the government to help these families rebuild their lives.

“This incident in Gandacherra is unprecedented,” Saha stated during the press conference. “We’ve never witnessed such unrest in this region before. The events seem to revolve around the Ananda Mela, with incidents occurring daily.”

The press conference also featured Pradesh Youth Congress President Neelkamal Saha and other party representatives. As tensions escalate, the Congress vows to take legal action in the coming days to address the situation and uphold communal harmony in Tripura.
