Agartala, 16th May 2026: An auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested in connection with the assault on photojournalist Bijoy Debnath at the Radhanagar petrol pump yesterday. The accused, identified as Suman Das, was apprehended from the Abhoynagar area of the capital and will be produced before the court seeking three days of police remand.
It is reported that, journalist Bijoy Debnath had gone to refuel his motorcycle at the Radhanagar petrol pump when an auto bearing registration number TR 01 J 3774 stopped in front of him. Upon protesting, the auto driver allegedly hurled abusive language at him. When Debnath questioned the use of such obscene language, the driver reportedly attacked him, leaving the journalist injured and bleeding.
Police intervened promptly and arrested the accused, bringing some relief to the journalist community. The incident has sparked concern over the safety of media professionals in the capital.
