Key speakers included Dr. Uttam Saha, Joint Director of the State Agriculture Research Station, and Dr. Samrat Chowdhury, Assistant Director of the Department of Animal Resource Development, Government of Tripura.
The workshop opened with a welcome address by Dr. Runu Dhar, Associate Professor and IQAC Coordinator. Prosenjit Pal highlighted the organisation’s ongoing activities and future plans. Arup Debnath discussed indigenous cattle breeds and their advantages over foreign breeds, elaborating on the production of cow based items such as incense, soap, powder, toothpaste, and medicines, and their role in rural livelihoods.
Speaking on the cultural and economic significance of cattle, Dr. Samrat Chowdhury emphasised the nutritional value of milk from indigenous breeds and the need for widespread awareness to protect cattle resources.
In his address, Dr. Uttam Saha warned that decades of excessive chemical fertiliser and pesticide use have severely damaged soil health. He stressed that natural farming is essential to prevent future food crises and called for restoring beneficial organisms like bees, earthworms, and soil microbes.
Jyotiprasad Debbarma reflected on the evolution of agriculture and animal husbandry since ancient times and underlined the importance of such workshops for environmental and social development.
Registrar Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty noted that India is facing an environmental crisis, with groundwater levels falling and forests giving way to concrete structures. He urged prioritising organic farming over chemical based agriculture and encouraged scientific research to make organic methods more efficient. He also called upon the youth to take a leading role.
In his presidential address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Bibhas Deb stated that gene technology is crucial for advancing cow conservation and organic farming. He stressed the need to balance development with environmental protection and highlighted the potential of cow based livelihoods in promoting self reliance among youth.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Debadatta Adak, Assistant Professor, and the programme was conducted by Dr. Anuj Kanchan Dutta Roy, Assistant Professor at the university.
