Agartala, 23rd October 2025: A 12-hour statewide shutdown was observed across Tripura today, called by the Civil Society of Tripura to press for the implementation of the tripartite agreement between Tipra Motha, the state government, and the central government. The accord includes provisions for identifying and repatriating illegal immigrants, among other measures aimed at safeguarding indigenous rights.
The bandh, which began early this morning, drew mixed reactions from political leaders. Speaking to reporters, senior legislator Sudip Roy Barman alleged that a faction within Tipra Motha was behind the shutdown, using the banner of the Civil Society of Tripura.
“This is a calculated move to mislead tribal communities ahead of the village committee elections. The central government is deceiving the indigenous population. Despite the tripartite agreement, no concrete steps have been taken so far,” Roy Barman said.
He further claimed that the bandh was an attempt to tarnish the image of the ruling government in the state. “This is a ploy to shield Amit Shah’s reputation. It’s hypocrisy calling a bandh against the very government you are part of,” he added.
Roy Barman also expressed concern over the impact of the shutdown on economically vulnerable groups, stating that poor citizens bore the brunt of the disruption. “This is part of a larger conspiracy,” he warned.
