Bangladesh Assistant High Commission celebrates “Sheikh Russell Day” in Agartala

Agartala, October 18, 2023:  The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala celebrated the “Sheikh Russell Day – 2023” on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, to mark the birthday of Sheikh Russell, the youngest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The day-long program was held in two phases, with various activities to commemorate the life and legacy of Sheikh Russell.

In the first phase, a wreath was placed on Sheikh Russell’s portrait at Sonar Tari Hotel, followed by special prayers for the souls of Sheikh Russell and all the martyrs of August 15, 1975. The messages of the Honorable President and the Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh were read out, and a documentary on Sheikh Russell was shown. A special discussion session was also held, where eminent personalities from Bangladesh and India spoke about the serene, lively and fearless life of Sheikh Russell.

The speakers praised the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and appreciated the initiative of Bangladesh to celebrate Sheikh Russell Day. They expressed hope that the strong relationship between Bangladesh and India would continue under the guidance of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina. They also stressed the need for awareness and action to ensure the rights and welfare of all children in the world.

The Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala, Arif Mohammad, gave the closing speech and paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family. He said that Bangabandhu named his beloved son after the famous philosopher and Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell, but this innocent child was brutally killed by the enemies of Bangladesh. He said that Sheikh Russel lives today as a symbol and humanitarian for disenfranchised children in the world.

In the second phase, a cultural program was organized with the participation of children and teenagers, followed by the distribution of “Sheikh Russell Scholarship – 2023” to five poor and meritorious students of Ishwar Paathshala. Food items were also distributed among the orphans and needy children of “Naba-Prantik” Orphanage.

The program was attended by journalists, media personalities, civil society dignitaries, dignitaries and officers and employees working in Agartala Mission. The program was conducted by Md. Rezaul Haque Chowdhury, First Secretary and Head of BAHC.
