Agartala, 8th May 2025: In a shocking incident that has rocked state, Srinagar police on Wednesday arrested Mahim Chakma, a Bangladeshi national, in connection with a deadly machete attack that left three members of a family critically injured. The arrest was made around 1 PM at the Agartala railway station.
According to police sources, Chakma, who hails from Tetultala in Khagrachari, Bangladesh, had illegally crossed into India two to three months ago. He had been working at a local drinking water factory until April 30, when he was dismissed for failing to provide valid identification and address documents.
The brutal attack took place on Monday night in the Nagichhara area of Agartala. Chakma allegedly visited the home of former bank manager Jewel Chandra, with whom he was acquainted through work. After sharing tea with the family, an altercation broke out when Jewel reportedly confronted Chakma over a financial dispute. In a sudden escalation, Chakma attacked Jewel, his wife, and son with a machete.
All three victims were rushed to GB Pant Hospital in critical condition. The Srinagar police, alerted to the scene, immediately cordoned off the house and launched an investigation. A forensic team was also deployed to examine the crime scene.
Chakma was tracked and arrested the following day, and a case has been registered. He was produced before the court on Wednesday, where the police sought remand for further interrogation.
Authorities are now investigating how Chakma managed to enter the country illegally and secure employment without documentation.
