Agartala, 26th November 2025:  The Tripura Police, in coordination with the Crime Branch, on Wednesday destroyed a major consignment of banned cough syrups worth Rs 1.25 crore. The seized narcotics, confiscated in July this year, were disposed of as per a court order.

IG Crime Branch Avula Ramesh Reddy, IPS, who chairs the High-Level Drug Destruction Committee, oversaw the destruction process. He explained that the case originated in Ambassa under Dhalai district before being transferred to the Crime Branch for detailed investigation.

“The case was registered in July, during which over 59,000 bottles of Eskuf banned cough syrup were seized. Following the court’s directive, we are destroying the entire consignment in an open area. Multiple investigations against NDPS smugglers are still in progress. Tripura Police is committed to achieving a Nesha Mukt Tripura. The seized items carry a market value of Rs 1.25 crore,” he said.

Speaking about the state’s anti-drug initiatives, the IG said that under Prayas Abhiyan, awareness programmes are being conducted across schools, colleges, and various public spaces.

“We have the toll-free number 112 for all types of complaints. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and helpline 1933 are also available for sharing information on drug peddling. Strict action will be taken on every input. Several initiatives are being carried out in collaboration with the NCB, Ministry of Social Welfare and Justice, and the Tripura Health Department,” he added.
