Agartala, 22nd June 2024:   The auspicious ‘Snan Yatra’ of Lord Jagannath Devata is being celebrated in Tripura, echoing the festivities across the country. The Jagannath Jew Temple and ISKCON Temple in Agartala are adorned for this special occasion drawing a massive crowd of devotees who eagerly participate in the sacred bath of Lord Jagannath.

The elaborate ritual commenced early in the morning as temple attendants led Lord Jagannath followed by Balaram and Subhadra to the bathing altar. Garlands adorned the deities as they received their ceremonial bath. After the sacred ablution, Lord Jagannath will be adorned in Gajanan’s attire, a momentous event that occurs once a year. This day also marks the birthday celebration of Lord Jagannath.

The bathing ceremony takes place in the Lilakshetra Purushottam area of Sri Jagannath, a classical Vittadhum Leela. Legend has it that this bath was performed during the Lord’s first appearance, known as the Adaylila of Sridaru Brahma. Maharaja Indradyumna and Queen Gundicha initiated this sacred bath at the auspicious moment following the incarnation of Mahaprabhu Daru Brahma. Interestingly, it is believed that Lord Jagannath experienced a fever after the bath.

In a unique tradition, the doors of the Puri temple remain closed to the public for 15 days after the bath, ensuring that no one catches a glimpse of Jagannathdev’s appearance during this period. If the fever subsides within these 15 days, the Lob Kalebar festival will be celebrated, and the temple will reopen. The much-awaited Rath Yatra of Jagannath is scheduled for July 7, during which Lord Jagannath, along with Balaram and Subhadra, will embark on their chariot journey to their aunt’s house.

The celebration of Jagannath’s bathing extends beyond Tripura, resonating throughout the country. Devotees also throng the Jagannath Jew Temple and ISKCON Temple in Agartala where former MLA Dr Dilip Das, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Datta and other dignitaries were present at the Purbasha ground to witness this divine event.
