Agartala, 16th February 2026: Sonamura witnessed an incident that echoed the old saying, “A thief’s mind is always on the cucumber field.” Four days after a bicycle theft, residents caught hold of a habitual thief in Thakurmura market area.
For weeks, residents of Khedabari, Thakurmura, and nearby localities had been troubled by nightly thefts of ducks, chickens, water pitchers, buckets, bicycles, and other household items. Locals alleged that a group of addicts had been targeting homes to fund their habits, creating widespread unrest in the community.
The latest case involved a bicycle stolen from Khedabari. The accused, a resident of Larmai Bari’s Rampada Para village, later admitted during questioning that he had sold the stolen bicycle to a man in the same locality. When the news spread, residents of Thakurmura detained him upon spotting him in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the thief initially tried to resist capture but was eventually subdued by the crowd. Market-goers then handed him over to police after administering a rough lesson of their own.
