Agartala, 18th June 2025: In a significant crackdown on illegal trade, Kailashahar police on Wednesday afternoon intercepted a suspected smuggling operation, seizing bidis worth an estimated ₹16 lakh from a vehicle at the Chini Bagan Naka point along the Kailashahar–Dharmanagar road.
Acting on suspicion during a routine check, police stopped a Bolero vehicle (registration TR-02L-1590) and recovered 34 large packets of bidis, concealed beneath four sacks of potatoes in an apparent effort to avoid detection. Authorities say the bidis were en route from Dharmanagar to the Babur Bazar area of Kailashahar.
The vehicle’s driver identified as Gias Uddin, a resident of Purba Yajekhaora village was arrested at the scene. The car and its contents were brought to Kailashahar police station for further investigation.
“This seizure was possible due to the alertness of our personnel stationed at the naka point. We are pursuing leads to trace others linked to the smuggling racket, and stricter surveillance will continue to prevent the movement of illegal goods,” said Officer-in-Charge Sukanta Sen Chowdhury.
Police sources confirmed that a special inquiry has been launched to determine whether a larger syndicate is operating behind the scenes.
