Agartala, 16th August 2026 : Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday outlined the issues concerning Tripura and the Northeast that he raised during the recently concluded Parliament session, with particular emphasis on road infrastructure, connectivity, tourism and development projects.
Speaking to reporters after the session, Deb said he had submitted 57 starred and unstarred questions related to Tripura, of which 15 were admitted for discussion. The issues covered a wide range of sectors, including national highways, railways, education, fertiliser supply, natural gas, mineral resources, fisheries and ongoing development initiatives.
The condition of national highways in Tripura was among the key concerns raised by the MP. Deb said several stretches had suffered extensive damage following the 2024 floods and alleged that lapses on the part of certain contractors had further contributed to the deterioration of roads. He urged the authorities to undertake repairs at the earliest.
Deb also suggested exploring concrete roads as a more durable alternative to conventional bitumen roads. He said a proposal had been made to construct a concrete road on an experimental basis along the Udaipur-Amarpur route. While acknowledging that concrete roads require greater investment initially, he said they could offer better durability and lower maintenance requirements over the long term.
Providing details of development works undertaken through his parliamentary allocations, Deb said Rs 15.76 crore had been utilised through MPLADS during his tenure in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. He further stated that 24 beneficiaries from Tripura had received a combined Rs 56.90 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund through his recommendation.
Tourism development also featured prominently in his briefing. Deb said proposals had been submitted for tourism-related projects at Datteshwari Kalibari, Belonia and Jolaibari. A separate project worth around Rs 140 crore has also been proposed for Majlishpur in Jirania, he said.
On Unakoti, Deb called for a comprehensive development plan rather than limiting efforts to the cleaning and preservation of its iconic rock-cut sculptures. He stressed the need for improved visitor amenities, including boundary walls, cafeterias, toilets, better connectivity and modern conservation facilities.
Deb also commented on Bills passed during the session and the amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. He said he would continue coordinating with the Centre and the Tripura government to expedite pending highway works, tourism projects and other development initiatives across the state.
