Agartala, 2nd June 2025:  Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday criticized the previous Left Front government for the poor drainage and sewerage infrastructure in Agartala, asserting that the situation has markedly improved since the BJP government took charge. According to Deb, water that previously remained stagnant for days now clears within hours due to significant upgrades in the city’s drainage system.

Deb explained, “Before our government came to power, waterlogging would persist in the city for days. Now, it drains away within a few hours. We have revamped the pump systems used for floodwater removal and restored several neglected water bodies. Our focus is not on assigning blame but on providing timely assistance to those affected.”

He visited a relief camp sheltering 103 families and pledged to visit others as well. Deb added that the state government, led by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, has mobilized all necessary resources with the administration to aid affected residents. “The people here have confirmed that they are receiving food, medicines, and other essentials promptly. The state has deployed 18 rescue teams, with around 2,800 families taking shelter,” he said.

Highlighting the early arrival of the monsoon this year, Deb noted that drainage improvement efforts had already been underway for some time. “Where there were only three water pumps earlier, we have now installed over 20. Road construction, pond restoration, and drain development projects are progressing actively. Previously, many drains were blocked with bamboo and debris, causing water to stagnate. Since the BJP government took office, we have constructed large drains and are continuing work on smaller ones to prevent waterlogging,” he explained.

Deb also mentioned the heavy rainfall and flooding across the Northeast this season and emphasized that Agartala has taken concrete steps to rapidly manage floodwaters. “Our arrangements have significantly reduced flood impact in the city,” he concluded.
