Agartala, 25th June 2024:    A solemn observance of ‘Black Day’ took place on Tuesday at the North District BJP office in Dharmanagar. The event marked the anniversary of the Emergency imposed in India from 1975 to 1977.

Prominent leaders including Dharmanagar MLA and State Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, Pradesh BJP Secretary Ratan Ghosh, Uttar Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Bhabatosh Das and North District BJP Party President Kajal Das gathered for a conference with media personnel at the district office.

During the press conference, Speaker Sen highlighted the significance of the day stating, “Today, June 25th, stands as a black day in India’s history. It marks the unfortunate period when basic freedoms were curtailed and voices of dissent were suppressed.”

He recalled the events leading to the Emergency, triggered by a court ruling on June 12, 1975, which barred the then Prime Minister from contesting elections. “The Emergency saw widespread arrests of writers, poets, and patriots who opposed the authoritarian measures,” Sen emphasized.

Reflecting on the impact of the Emergency, he added, “Human rights were violated, and cultural expressions were suppressed. It was a period of hardship for the people of India.”

Sen reiterated the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has vowed to prevent such a situation from recurring in India’s democratic history. “We must remain vigilant against any erosion of human rights,” he urged, calling for a collective effort to safeguard India’s democratic values.
