Agartala, 7th September 2026 : With the village committee elections drawing closer, the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT alliance has intensified its organisational and electoral activities in Mungiakami Block. On Monday, BJP candidates backed by the alliance filed nomination papers for six village committee seats, with a large gathering of party workers and supporters turning up at the nomination centre.
Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, BJP Mandal President Dhananjay Das, Vice-President Gopal Das and several local leaders and supporters of the three alliance partners were present during the nomination process. The candidates reached the nomination centre in a procession and submitted their papers in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
The event was seen by alliance leaders as a display of organisational strength at the grassroots level and a demonstration of unity ahead of the electoral battle.
Meanwhile, preparations by alliance partner Tipra Motha have also gathered pace in Mungiakami Block, which has a total of 14 village council seats. According to party sources, candidates backed by Tipra Motha had filed nominations for around half of the seats last Saturday in the presence of MDC Utpal Debbarma. The process gained further momentum on Monday, with the party claiming that nominations for nearly 90 per cent of the seats allocated to it had been completed.
With the nomination process nearing completion, the alliance is now preparing to shift its focus towards campaigning. The coming days are expected to test the alliance’s seat-sharing arrangement, grassroots coordination and ability to translate its combined organisational strength into electoral support.
Speaking to reporters after the nomination filing, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma launched a sharp attack on the Congress and CPI(M). He alleged that despite ruling the state for extended periods, both parties had failed to adequately address the welfare and development needs of tribal communities.
Debbarma claimed that people living in tribal-dominated areas had consequently remained deprived of various basic rights and amenities. Expressing confidence about the upcoming polls, he asserted that the Congress and CPI(M), which he described as opposed to the alliance, would not be able to win a single village committee seat across the state.
The minister’s remarks indicate the alliance’s intention to make the village committee elections a major political contest in tribal areas, while seeking to expand its organisational influence at the grassroots.
