BJP confident of sweeping all 21 ULBs; Abhishek Debroy hits out at CPI(M)-Congress alliance

Date:

Agartala, 4th November 2026 : With preparations gathering momentum for the upcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in Tripura, BJP state president Abhishek Debroy on Wednesday expressed strong confidence that his party would win all 21 urban local bodies, asserting that the opposition lacked the public support and organisational strength to challenge the ruling party.

Criticising the proposed electoral understanding between the CPI(M) and Congress, Debroy said the alliance had failed to find acceptance among the people. He described the opposition’s uncertainty over seat-sharing and election strategy as a sign of political confusion and a lack of confidence.

He alleged that both parties were facing an existential crisis and were repeatedly changing their positions on whether to contest the elections jointly or independently.

“People are not ready to accept the CPI(M)-Congress alliance. The opposition parties themselves are confused about their political direction. They cannot decide whether to fight together or separately, which clearly reflects their uncertainty,” Debroy said.

Contrasting the opposition’s situation with the BJP’s preparations, the state BJP president maintained that his party had already completed its internal groundwork and finalised its candidate selection process. He said the party had received the necessary instructions from the central leadership after discussions and would formally announce the names at the appropriate time.

According to Debroy, the BJP is likely to announce candidates for most urban local bodies on November 5, while the candidate list for the Agartala Municipal Corporation may be released either on November 5 or November 6.

He also predicted a strong public response in favour of the BJP, claiming that a large number of young supporters would participate in the party’s programmes in Agartala.

Referring to the recent joint rally organised by the CPI(M) and Congress, Debroy questioned the strength of the opposition alliance, claiming that the gathering failed to reflect the combined organisational capabilities of the two parties. He said the response demonstrated that the alliance had not succeeded in gaining popular support.

The BJP leader also accused the opposition of attempting to undermine democratic institutions, asserting that his party would continue to resist such efforts politically.

Highlighting the development initiatives undertaken by the BJP-led government, Debroy said voters had witnessed the condition of urban local bodies around a decade ago and were now in a position to assess the changes brought about during the present government’s tenure.

“There is no reason for us to be concerned. Our preparations are complete, and we have a clear electoral strategy. The BJP is committed to working for the people, and development is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Manik Saha,” he said.

Reiterating the party’s ideological commitment, Debroy said the BJP continued to follow its guiding principle of ‘Nation First’, placing the country above the party and individual interests.

He maintained that the opposition’s electoral calculations, whether through separate contests, a joint understanding or a broader alliance, would make little difference to the BJP’s prospects.

Expressing confidence in the party’s electoral performance, Debroy said the BJP was prepared to contest all 21 urban local bodies and was confident of securing victory across the state.
