Agartala, 19th April 2026: A political row has broken out in Tripura following allegations against BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain from Boxanagar, who is accused of pressuring police officials and using abusive language in a purported telephonic conversation that has gone viral on social media.
According to official sources, the controversy centres on an alleged phone call between the MLA and a police officer posted at Kalamchoura Police Station. In the audio clip, widely circulated online, Hossain is purportedly heard threatening the officer and attempting to influence police action in favour of an alleged accused.
Police sources said the Kalamchoura Police Station has initiated suo motu legal proceedings against the MLA for allegedly exerting unlawful pressure and issuing threats. The officer was also allegedly warned of false cases if he failed to comply with the demands, they added.
Amid the escalating controversy, police personnel have urged higher authorities, including Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, to take appropriate legal action. A formal communication has reportedly been sent highlighting concerns over interference in policing.
Sources further claimed that this is not the first instance of such allegations against the MLA. He had earlier faced accusations of influencing police functioning in criminal cases and was also reportedly linked to disturbances during the ADC elections in areas under the Golaghati Assembly segment.
Separately, allegations have also surfaced regarding the construction of a market shed on government land in his constituency.
In the purported audio clip, the MLA is also heard accusing the police officer of accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from supporters of the Tipra Motha Party during the ADC polls and of failing to act on post-election violence targeting BJP workers.
The matter escalated further as the MLA allegedly made defamatory personal remarks against the officer during the conversation, sources said.
