Agartala, 7th September 2026 : The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partner Tipra Motha Party (TMP) on Sunday held a crucial meeting in Agartala to work out a seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Village Committee (VC) elections.
The discussions took place at Sonar Tori Hotel and were attended by senior leaders of both parties. The BJP delegation was led by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, with Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy and party general secretary Bipin Debbarma also present.
Representing TMP were MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, MLA Biswajit Kalai, TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma and former CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia.
The talks came a day after Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and TMP founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where discussions were held on implementing the Tiprasa Accord.
Ranjit Debbarma said the parties would assess their respective organisational strengths before allocating seats. He indicated that adjustments could still be made during the nomination withdrawal period.
So far, 1,724 nomination papers have been filed by 1,721 candidates. CPI(M) has fielded 865 candidates, TMP 839 and Congress eight, while no BJP candidate has filed nominations yet.
The elections will cover 587 VCs comprising 4,597 seats, after a gap of nearly a decade.
