Agartala, 4th February 2025: The body of 90-year-old Amar Chanda Debnath was recovered from a pond nearly two months after he went missing from his home. The incident took place in the Purba Durlav Narayan area under Sonamura police station.
Reportedly, Amar Chanda Debnath, a resident of Khas Chowmuhani area of Melaghar police station had visited his eldest son Rabindra Debnath’s house in Purba Durlav Narayan for a kirtan event in December last year. The only route to his son’s house involved crossing a pond belonging to their neighbor Nikhil Das. It is believed that the elderly man may have accidentally fallen into the pond.
After Amar Chanda went missing, his family filed a missing person report with the Melaghar police station three days later. Despite the search efforts, no trace of him was found. Today, his body was found floating in Nikhil Das’s pond when locals went fishing.
Authorities were immediately informed, and the body was recovered and sent for an autopsy. The exact cause of death remains unknown at this time. “We are still in shock and trying to come to terms with this tragic incident,” said Rabindra Debnath, the deceased’s son.
Nikhil Das, the owner of the pond, expressed his sorrow over the incident: “It’s heartbreaking to know that Debnath may have accidentally fallen into the pond on his way to his son’s house.”
The police have confirmed that the body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy is completed.
