Agartala, 26th November 2024:  A major drug racket operating under the pretense of a tea shop was exposed in the capital’s Golap Bagan area, leading to the arrest of five individuals, including the alleged mastermind, Uma Malakar.

Acting on a secret tip-off, a team from the East Agartala Police Station conducted a raid on Tuesday in Golap Bagan, apprehending four youths—Rajesh Debnath, Biswajit Majumdar, Joydeb Das, and Osman Mia. The police seized 36 grams of brown sugar from the suspects, who later revealed under interrogation that they procured the drugs from a woman operating a tea shop.

A subsequent raid at the tea shop led to the arrest of Uma Malakar, along with the recovery of 95 boxes of brown sugar and Rs 16,000 in cash. The police also confiscated three mobile phones, a motorcycle, and other evidence from the accused.

According to the Sadar Subdivision Police Officer, Uma Malakar was the key supplier of brown sugar in the area, distributing the narcotic to several young men who sold it across Agartala city at inflated prices.

Some individuals involved in the racket managed to flee during the operation, but the police claim to have identified them and are intensifying efforts to apprehend the culprits.
