Burglary at Bishramganj hospital sparks alarm over rising drug-related thefts

Agartala, 12th July 2025:   A shocking incident of theft at the Bishramganj Primary Health Centre has left the local community rattled. Late last night, a group of unidentified thieves broke into the hospital’s OST (Opioid Substitution Therapy) center and made off with a stash of valuable items, including drug administration syringes and high-cost medications used in de-addiction treatments for substance-dependent youth.

Health officials say the stolen medications play a vital role in helping addicts recover through therapeutic interventions. The theft comes at a time when the Health Department has prohibited syringe sales in the open market, making hospitals a prime target for criminal gangs seeking such materials.

This afternoon, the hospital authorities lodged a formal complaint with the Bishramganj Police Station following the break-in. Preliminary reports indicate that the culprits may be drug-addicted youths resorting to theft to sustain their substance dependence. The community is growing increasingly anxious, especially as similar incidents have taken place in local religious institutions and schools and now even healthcare facilities are under threat. Earlier that morning, Dr. Puja Deb from the OPD center disclosed multiple cases of mobile phone theft involving patients, staff, and volunteers. Alarmingly, the hospital lacks any night security personnel, sparking serious concerns over the safety of both medical staff and those receiving treatment.

Residents of Bishalgarh subdivision are reportedly in a state of distress, worried not only about public safety but also the vulnerability of institutions vital to community welfare. Local leaders are urging immediate action to reinforce security at all medical facilities in the region.
