Burglary at butcher’s home sparks outrage at Dharmanagar; Police role under scrutiny

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 11th July 2025:   Dharmanagar’s Paschim Batrasi suburb was rocked by yet another burglary incident raising serious concerns over public safety and the effectiveness of local policing. This time, the victim is well-known meat trader Ajay Kumar Dutta, whose house was broken into during his week-long visit to relatives in Agartala for the Kharchi Mela.

Upon returning home early this morning, Datta and his wife were shocked to find the house door ajar and the interior ransacked. Furniture and personal belongings lay scattered across the rooms, revealing a clear case of forced entry. The family broke down in tears as they found the extent of the theft over Rs 50,000 in cash, gold and silver ornaments, critical documents, and three LPG cylinders were reported stolen. The intruders allegedly gained access through a broken rear ventilator.

Local residents are once again raising questions about the efficiency of the Dharmanagar police station, citing a spike in thefts across suburban areas. Frustration is mounting over what is being described as police apathy. Some community members sarcastically quipped, “Is the thief among the mustard seeds?” a pointed reference hinting at suspicions over the integrity of police personnel.

There is growing demand to transfer the current Officer-in-Charge and appoint a competent and accountable replacement capable of restoring law and order.
