Agartala, 19th July 2025: Growing anger is simmering among traders in Dharmanagar over a surge in thefts plaguing the city and its markets, with business leaders accusing the police of inaction and apathy.
Representatives from multiple trader associations including the Dharmanagar Merchant Association, Retail Traders Association and Vegetable Traders Association submitted a memorandum with the Dharmanagar police station demanding urgent action.
“Thefts have become rampant, and thieves are emboldened. The business community feels abandoned by the administration,” said Amiyanshu Sharma, president of the Merchant Association speaking to media personnel outside the station.
According to traders, a recent theft at a prominent shop revealed the identity of the accused through CCTV footage. However, the police allegedly responded with disturbing indifference. One officer reportedly stated, “We know this thief, but we cannot catch him. If you can, break his hands and legs and hand him over to us.”
This statement sparked outrage. “If this is the attitude, then what is the point of having police?” questioned a local trader. “Are we supposed to take the law into our own hands?” he asked.
Discontent has also risen over the conduct of Sub-Inspector Bishwajit Das, with several traders alleging negligence and insensitivity. “We are feeling insecure in our own workplace. The administration’s failure is affecting our livelihood,” one member of the deputation said.
The business community has urged immediate identification and arrest of culprits, recovery of stolen goods, and structural improvements in local policing. Sharma emphasized, “We are not just registering complaints—we are demanding accountability.”
