Agartala, 18th August 2025: Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath today said that carbon credits can be a revolutionary step to combat the effects of climate change and create new avenues of income for farmers.
The Minister said this after saplings of various fruit trees were planted on the premises of Swami Vivekananda College in Mohanpur through a program organized by the Rotary Club of Aspiring Agartala.
“We must ensure to work to protect the environment. We are now modernizing, and because of that, global warming is increasing. Modernization is responsible for global warming. If carbon dioxide is excessive in the air, the environment is destroyed, but if the amount is high in soil, then it is good for agriculture and production will be better. So, we must plant more trees to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Rise in carbon dioxide causes global warming, and we must plant more and more trees to make the world cool,” said the Minister.
He said that in the next few years, the demand for selling carbon credits in India will increase by 30% from today, and farmers, along with the government, can sell carbon credits in the international market and earn additional income through the use of modern agricultural systems and renewable energy.
“In fact, not all of us are aware of carbon credits. It may take us some time to understand that carbon can also be sold. One carbon credit is the equivalent of absorbing 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide and storing it in the soil. Basically, carbon credits can be a revolutionary step to combat the effects of climate change and create new avenues of income for farmers. Sustainable agricultural practices such as organic farming, climate-smart agriculture, planting trees, and afforestation can store carbon in the soil and sell it. Through this, farmers will not only protect the environment but will also be able to earn additional income by selling carbon credits in the international and domestic markets. This initiative will not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental temperatures but will also pave the way for farmers’ economic self-reliance and social development,” said the Minister.
He also lauded the role of the Rotary Club of Aspiring Agartala for their initiative in various social works. The program was attended by Principal of Swami Vivekananda College Haradhan Debnath, social worker Kartik Acharya, members of the Rotary Club of Aspiring Agartala, and students.
