Agartala, December 22: In honour of the renowned Indian mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan’s birth anniversary, the Department of Mathematics at Maharaja Bir Bikram University marked “National Mathematics Day 2023” on Friday. The event featured a speech competition on the theme “Mathematics for Everyone,” engaging the university’s student body.
The closing ceremony, held under the auspices of Professor Satyadeo Poddar, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, saw Dr. Runu Dhar, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Associate Professor, delivering the welcome address. During his speech, University Registrar Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty emphasized the universal language of mathematics as the language of nature, capable of unravelling the mysteries of the universe. He underscored how mathematics fosters rational thinking and permeates all aspects of life, from market calculations to understanding the unknown.
As the chief guest, Professor Mihir Deb, former president of Tripura Board of Secondary Education and a noted physicist, received a “congratulatory letter” and a memento from Prof. Satyadeo Poddar. Professor Dev expounded on mathematics as the poetry of thinking, transcending borders and affiliations. He praised the initiative of Maharaja Bir Bikram University’s Mathematics Department, encouraging students to embrace mathematics as an enjoyable and fascinating subject.
In his presidential address, Prof. Satyadeo Poddar lauded mathematics as the pinnacle of science and humanity’s most beautiful and powerful creation. He emphasized that the precision and logic inherent in mathematics make it the music of logic, a sentiment felt by true poets. Prof. Poddar urged students to explore interdisciplinary mathematics, aligning with the New Education Policy 2020.
The vote of thanks during the closing ceremony was delivered by Dr. Devdatta Adak, Assistant Professor of Mathematics. The speech competition results saw Saurabh Das, Bappa Majumder, and Mukta Roy from the University’s Department of Mathematics securing the first, second, and third positions, respectively. The event witnessed the active participation of hundreds of current and former students, reinforcing the enthusiasm for mathematics education at Maharaja Bir Bikram University.
