Agartala, 1st April 2025: The annual Chaitra Mela has commenced in the Shakuntala Road area of the capital city, coinciding with the festive atmosphere surrounding the upcoming 1st of Baishakh. The fair, which began on Tuesday, will run until April 14, bringing a surge of activity to the area.
Spanning the streets near Shakuntala Road, Orient Chowmuhani and the Children’s Park premises, the fair has already attracted significant foot traffic. Shopkeepers have set up a variety of stalls, offering everything from clothes and jewelry to daily household products. “The crowd is growing every moment,” noted one vendor amidst the bustling marketplace.
This year, the Agartala Municipal Corporation has implemented a token system to provide free space to sellers. However, allegations of irregularities have surfaced. A businessman, who preferred to remain anonymous, claimed, “I had to buy a stall for 10,000 taka. If the weather holds up, business should be good.”
Local traders expressed optimism about the fair, which traditionally draws large crowds ahead of Baishakh. “People come with their families and relatives to buy essentials,” shared a shopkeeper, highlighting the fair’s importance for both commerce and community bonding.
Despite the concerns, traders appeared committed to making the event a success. “Like every year, we are doing our best to organize the Chaitra Mela effectively. Security and order are also being prioritized,” assured a trader from his stall. As the Chaitra Mela takes place, its blend of commerce and culture continues to captivate residents, reaffirming its place as a cherished local tradition.
