Children Must Be Raised as Responsible Human Beings: Manik Sarkar

Date:

Agartala, 16th August 2026 :   Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Sunday stressed the need to raise children as responsible and compassionate human beings, saying that academic and professional success alone cannot make a person truly successful.

He was speaking at a financial assistance programme organised by the Umpad Barman and Anjali Barman Trust at Muktdhara Auditorium. The programme was organised to provide support to economically disadvantaged and meritorious students.

Addressing the gathering, Sarkar said mothers play a crucial role in shaping children into responsible human beings. If proper values and moral education are lacking, a child may become a doctor, engineer or professor, but may fail to become a good human being, he said.

He expressed concern that some parents have become increasingly self-centred and do not adequately monitor their children’s education and well-being after sending them to school.

Sarkar said children must be taught to stand beside people in need and contribute to society. If children are not properly brought up at home, society will face serious problems in the future, he cautioned.

He also expressed concern over the present system of governance, claiming that it is moving in the opposite direction from the objectives of India’s freedom struggle. He said the country had still not been completely freed from unemployment and poverty even after 80 years of Independence.

According to Sarkar, continued social struggle is necessary to achieve the true objectives of Independence.

Eminent litterateur Dr Budharay Debbarma and several other distinguished personalities were also present at the programme.

As part of the initiative, 93 economically disadvantaged and meritorious studentswere each provided₹7,000 in cash assistance, along with books. The initiative was undertaken to support the students in continuing their education.
