Agartala, 10th April 2026: Tensions flared in Takarjala, under Tripura’s Sepahijala District, ahead of the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council election scheduled for April 12, after a violent clash between workers of the Tipra Motha Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to reports, the unrest began during the final phase of election campaigning when supporters of both parties engaged in an argument that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, leaving several people injured. Police intervention initially brought the situation under control.
However, the situation worsened later when a large group of Tipra Motha Party supporters allegedly gathered near the residence of BJP candidate Nirmal Debbarma and attempted to attack the property. Security forces were deployed in large numbers to prevent further escalation.
During efforts to disperse the crowd, Sepahijala District Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma sustained injuries after being targeted with slingshots, officials said.
Following the incident, security has been significantly tightened in the area, with additional forces, including Assam Rifles, deployed to restore calm and prevent further violence.
