Agartala, 23rd March 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to enhancing dental healthcare, announcing that the Dental Council of India (DCI) has granted approval for the commencement of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) courses at Agartala Government Dental College.
Addressing a training program for Community Health Officers (CHO) of West Tripura at Pragna Bhavan, organized by the National Oral Health Programme wing of NHM in collaboration with the IDA Tripura State Branch, Dr. Saha emphasized the significance of continuous learning and technological advancements in dentistry. The event was held in observance of World Oral Health Day 2025.
“As Chief Minister, I must never forget my roots as a dental surgeon. Patient care should always be our top priority. The health sector in the state has undergone a remarkable transformation. Before 2018, the idea of establishing a government dental college was not entertained. Despite my efforts during the previous administration, it was dismissed. However, with determination, we have successfully established Agartala Government Dental College. Dentistry is evolving, and we must adapt to new technologies to provide optimal treatment,” Dr. Saha stated.
Highlighting health concerns in the region, he noted the high prevalence of oral cancer in the Northeast due to betel nut and tobacco consumption. “In my Mukhyamantri Samipesu program, I encounter a significant number of cancer patients. We are working towards introducing a mobile dental treatment van. Additionally, Rs. 200 crore has been sanctioned under the PM DevINE project to strengthen dental infrastructure. With the approval for MDS courses, we are also planning for further seat expansion and long-term development. Superspeciality services are being introduced, and while kidney transplants have already begun, preparations for liver transplants are also underway,” he added.
The event was attended by Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Health Director Dr. Sanjib Debbarma, SM Ali, President of the Tripura State Dental Council, and IDA State Branch President Dr. Partha Roy Chowdhury, among others.
