Agartala, October 11, 2023: In a fervent display of dissent, the Sadar District Congress organized a protest march on Wednesday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the recent electricity tariff hike. Protagonist Prabir Chakraborty and a host of other activists rallied in solidarity against what they deem an unjustifiable burden on the populace.
Speaking at the protest, Chakraborty voiced his concerns over the escalating tariffs, emphasizing that the Corporation had failed to enhance service quality in tandem with the rate hikes. He criticized the government for implementing the decision without due consideration for the new electricity law.
“The state government’s move to increase electricity tariffs in the name of regulatory commissions is unfounded,” Chakraborty asserted, challenging the rationale behind the steep spike. He further questioned the disparities, highlighting that Tripura witnessed a nearly seven-fold increase, while other states maintained their rates.
Taking aim at the government’s fiscal policies, Chakraborty alleged a series of fee hikes since 2018, alleging an atmosphere of disorder and asserting that malfeasance and corruption have left the electricity corporation reeling in financial losses.
The protest procession, commencing from the Agartala Congress Bhavan premises, wound its way through the city, culminating in a peaceful assembly around TSECL’s headquarters in Bhuturia. Here, a delegation presented their grievances to the Assistant General Manager, urging a reevaluation of the tariff adjustments.
Critics argue that the tariff increase stands at odds with the broader national context, prompting calls for transparent and equitable energy policies in Tripura. As tensions rise, citizens await the government’s response to the impassioned appeal for a rollback of the tariff hike.
