Agartala, 26th July 2026 : Tension prevailed in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar on Saturday after the Congress alleged that two of its workers were brutally assaulted by BJP-backed miscreants following student-youth protests over the alleged NEET examination irregularities.
According to the Congress, workers Sahed and Zakir were attacked in front of the Chandpur Aponjon Club while returning after visiting party activists who had reportedly been assaulted earlier during the protests. The injured duo was rescued by fellow party workers and rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
The party claimed that students and youths had organised a protest against the nationwide NEET controversy in Dharmanagar when a group of alleged miscreants attacked the demonstrators. To escape the assault, several protesters reportedly took shelter at the Dharmanagar District Congress office. Senior district Congress leaders later reached the spot and held discussions with the police and administration in an effort to restore normalcy.
However, the Congress alleged that the attack on Sahed and Zakir took place later while they were returning from visiting the injured activists. They were first taken to Dharmanagar Police Station before being shifted to the district hospital for medical treatment.
Speaking to reporters at the hospital, Congress leaders, including newly elected MLA Jahar Chakraborty, accused ruling party-backed miscreants of orchestrating the assault. They alleged that political violence had increased in the constituency since the Dharmanagar by-election and claimed that opposition workers were being targeted to create an atmosphere of fear.
The Congress leadership demanded the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible, warning that if no action is taken within 24 hours, the party will launch a massive agitation, including laying siege to the police station and bringing Dharmanagar town to a standstill.
