Agartala, 12th August 2025: Residents of Ichhapur village in Kailashahar’s Gournagar block are grappling with severe hardships as the only access road connecting Wards 4, 5, and 6 has deteriorated into a dangerous, nearly impassable stretch. The three-kilometre-long brick-soling road, which begins near Arvind Deb’s residence in Ward 4 and extends to Balichhara in Ward 6, has not seen repairs for years, leaving nearly 500 families stranded.
The road has suffered extensive damage due to landslides on both sides, which have destroyed drainage systems and displaced bricks. Even light rainfall turns the path into a muddy quagmire, making walking treacherous and vehicular movement impossible. Villagers say the situation has severely impacted emergency transport, school commutes, and daily life.
Former BJP panchayat member Ansar Ali blamed the Congress–CPI(M) coalition for the stalled repairs. “In 2021, when the BJP managed the Ichhapur panchayat, we submitted a road repair proposal to the Public Works Department (PWD), and work had begun. But after the 2024 panchayat elections, the new Congress–CPI(M) leadership failed to maintain contact with the PWD, halting all progress,” Ali alleged.
Locals claim that despite repeated deputations to both the panchayat and the PWD over the past year, no action has been taken. Frustrated by the lack of response—even after direct appeals to the PWD office—villagers have turned to the media to amplify their concerns.
In a public show of anger, residents have demanded immediate intervention from the panchayat authorities to restore the road and ensure safe passage for the community.
