Agartala, 28th September 2026 : Congress leader Md. Badruzzaman has alleged that attempts were made to influence voters during the ongoing village committee elections in three areas under Golakpur Block by distributing liquor and threatening voters.
According to Badruzzaman, the election process for three village committees in the Golakpur Block area began on Monday. He alleged that since Sunday night, groups of people had been visiting homes in Viliyapara, Debasthal Tea Estate and Hirachara Tea Estate with liquor, allegedly with the intention of influencing voters.
Badruzzaman claimed that the matter was immediately brought to the attention of the Observer and the police Sector Officer, with an appeal for strict action. However, he alleged that no prompt or effective measures were taken by the authorities.
He further alleged that persons associated with the BJP and Tipra Motha were intimidating voters by warning them that government assistance or benefits could be denied if they did not vote for the respective parties.
Despite the allegations, Badruzzaman said no major untoward incident had been reported in the Golakpur Block area so far. He claimed that many voters had overcome their fears and were turning up at polling stations to exercise their franchise.
He also alleged that despite instructions from the Returning Officer restricting the movement of outsiders on polling day, BJP workers from the town were moving freely in the area.
Badruzzaman accused the police, Returning Officer and Sector Officer of failing to take corrective measures and warned that continued inaction could lead to resistance among local voters. The allegations could not be independently verified.
