Agartala, October 31, 2023: The Pradesh Congress Committee observed the 39th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Tuesday, as ‘Sacrifice Day’. The party leaders and workers hoisted the flag at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan in the morning and paid floral tributes to the portrait of Indira Gandhi.
The state Congress president Asish Kumar Saha said that Indira Gandhi was the first woman prime minister of the country and she sacrificed herself to preserve the unity of the country. He said that the people of the country have not forgotten her contribution and legacy. He said that today was the day to take oath inspired by patriotism.
The Congress party also organized various programs to mark the occasion, such as blood donation camps and distribution of fruits to patients in hospitals. The Pradesh Congress president and MLA Gopal Roy also visited the ‘Shahid Bedi’ at Gandhighat and paid homage to Indira Gandhi.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards on October 31, 1984, in New Delhi. She was the third prime minister of India and the only woman to hold the office till date. She was known for her decisive leadership and bold decisions, such as the nationalization of banks, the liberation of Bangladesh, the emergency, and the operation Blue Star. She was also a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
