Agartala, 3rd April 2025: Residents of the Konaban panchayat area in the Kamalasagar assembly constituency have accused the local panchayat of mismanagement and deceit over the construction of a 94-meter road drain. The controversy centers around the road connecting Konaban It bhata Chowmuhani to Ganapati Goswami Ashram and Chakbasta Haripur, which has been in disrepair for years.
Locals have long complained that even light rain turns the road into a muddy mess, with water flowing over it and causing significant damage. “This road is our lifeline to Konaban, Koyadepa and Madhupur. We’ve been asking for a drain for years to solve this problem,” said a resident.
Responding to these demands, the panchayat recently allocated resources for the drain, delivering bricks and sand to the site. Initially, the move was met with relief and optimism. However, just four days later, the materials were mysteriously removed late at night. “Why did they bring the materials only to take them away?” questioned an angry local. “It feels like a betrayal,” local added.
Some residents have gone further, accusing the panchayat of corruption. “The head of the panchayat has swallowed the bricks and sand,” alleged another resident.
When approached for comment, Chandan Bhowmik, the panchayat member for the ward, initially avoided the issue. He later claimed the materials were mistakenly delivered to the wrong location and had been redirected to Ward No. 4. “The work for Ward No. 4 is now underway,” he stated, though his explanation left many unconvinced. “How many more such ‘mistakes’ are being made by the panchayat?” asked a skeptical resident.
The incident has left the local residents frustrated and demanding accountability. “We deserve better,” said one resident. “This is not just about a road; it’s about trust.”
