Agartala, 20th August 2024:   Continuous rainfall over the past two days has led to a significant rise in the water level of the Muhuri River, causing severe flooding in the Belonia sub-division of South Tripura District. The relentless downpour has resulted in extensive damage to agricultural lands, houses, and roads, prompting the district administration to take swift action to ensure public safety.

The heavy rains have inundated several areas, including Santirbazar and Belonia. Notably, the vicinity of Sunflower School in Santirbazar, Ward No. 3 of Municipal Council and various other locations have been severely affected. Water has entered numerous homes, displacing residents and causing widespread distress. In response, temporary camps have been established to provide shelter and assistance to the affected population.

Local leaders and officials have been actively involved in rescue operations. Nitish Debnath, also known as Suman Debnath, the winning candidate of Ward No. 7 of the Dakshin Tripura Zilla Parishad has been instrumental in relocating people to safe shelters. Additionally, Santirbazar Municipal Council Vice Chairman Satyabrata Saha, MLA Pramod Reang and other officials have been on the ground, assisting in the rescue efforts.

The city of Belonia has also been heavily impacted, with areas such as Arya Colony, Shaltila, Jogmaya Kalibari, Thana, Ram Thakur Memorial Temple, Hall Chowmuhani, Jagannath Bari Road, District Education Office, and the Municipal Office submerged. The road from Bilonia to Birchandra Road to Paikhola has suffered extensive damage, further complicating relief efforts.

Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has directed the district administration to prioritize public safety and take appropriate measures to mitigate the impact of the floods. In a message shared on social media, he emphasized the need for immediate action and assured the public that relief centers have been set up to provide necessary assistance. The Chief Minister also highlighted that several areas in South Tripura and other districts are facing similar flood situations due to the heavy rains.

The South District Administration has urged residents to seek shelter in the temporary camps and has launched a toll-free helpline for assistance. The helpline numbers are 6909358819, 03823222046, 03823223066, and 1077. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected communities.

As Tripura grapples with the aftermath of the heavy rains, the coordinated efforts of local leaders, officials, and the district administration are crucial in managing the crisis and providing relief to those impacted by the floods.
