Agartala, 20th August 2024:   The water level of the Howrah River is rising alarmingly due to continuous rains, leading to widespread flooding in various parts of Agartala. The most severely affected areas include Baldakhal, Chandrapur and the Sri Lanka slum. The administration along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has swiftly begun rescue operations to assist those trapped by the rising waters.

The heavy rainfall has caused extensive damage across the West Tripura district. The Howrah River’s swelling waters have turned aggressive, flooding several areas. Notably, the National Highway between Chandrapur and the Resham Bagan Bridge in Agartala is underwater, bringing traffic to a complete halt. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel are actively involved in rescuing residents stranded in the flooded zones.

In the Banamalipur assembly constituency, the Howrah River has inundated homes in Ward No. 31, leaving many residents in distress. Anjana Das, the local councilor has been on the ground with her support team since morning providing assistance to those affected by the deluge.

Authorities including police and administrative officials are closely monitoring the situation. In a bid to provide shelter to those displaced by the floods, the administration has set up a temporary relief camp at Swami Dayalananda Vidyaniketan in Dhaleswar. Efforts are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected residents as the situation remains critical.
