Agartala, 4th February 2025:  Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced today that efforts are underway to strengthen Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACs) by introducing computerization and establishing multi-purpose PACs at the Panchayat level.

“We are taking significant steps to enhance PACs through computerization in Tripura. Additionally, initiatives are in place to set up multi-purpose PACs, such as milk and fisheries cooperative societies, while also offering e-services through these PACs,” Dr. Saha stated.

He emphasized that the cooperative sector plays a crucial role in strengthening both the state and the country. Development in this sector will help eradicate poverty and curb corruption, fostering a more prosperous Tripura.

Dr. Saha made these remarks while inaugurating a one-day state-level conference on “Promotion and Development of Cooperatives” at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan.

Addressing the audience, the Chief Minister highlighted that raising public awareness about cooperatives is a key objective of such programs. He pointed out that a lack of awareness prevents many from benefiting from cooperative initiatives.

“The cooperative movement is a bloodless revolution that can significantly strengthen society. Strengthening cooperative societies in rural areas will boost the country’s financial standing. Today, India is the world’s fifth-largest economy, up from the 11th position. This remarkable progress has been achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our next goal is to become the third-largest economy, and the growth of the cooperative sector will be instrumental in achieving this target,” he said.

Dr. Saha further noted that the conference aims to review the successes of cooperatives while also identifying and addressing shortcomings to enhance future progress.

“The Tripura Cooperative Department observes Cooperative Week every year, organizing discussions and competitions to promote public awareness. Currently, around 9 lakh out of the state’s 40 lakh residents are directly or indirectly linked to cooperative societies. Our goal is to extend the benefits of cooperatives to the entire population,” he added. Highlighting the importance of digitalization, the Chief Minister stated that computerizing all PACs would ensure transparency and help prevent corruption.

“LAMPS and PACs have now been authorized for LPG distribution and petrol and diesel dealerships. This initiative has already begun in Tripura. Strengthening LAMPS and PACs financially will make them self-reliant, enabling them to help others achieve financial independence as well,” he concluded.
