Agartala, 11th July 2024:  : Asserting the significance of the upcoming Tripura three-tier Panchayat elections for rural communities, Tripura CPIM state committee secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday accused the BJP government of undermining democratic processes since its inception in 2018. Chaudhury voiced these concerns while leading a nomination filing rally in Agartala, criticizing the current state of electoral integrity under BJP rule.

Chaudhury emphasized that the Tripura State Election Commission has finally announced the dates for the three-tier Panchayat elections after much delay.

“Today, the notifications have been published, and the filing of nominations has commenced. We are submitting nominations for the West Tripura Zila Parishad. Since 2018, the BJP-IPFT coalition has governed on the basis of false promises, and since then, democracy has been stifled. Every election since then, including the recent Lok Sabha election, has been a farce,” alleged Chaudhury.

He underscored the importance of these Panchayat elections, noting that the CPIM has consistently urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure fair conduct.

“However, the state government and SEC have failed to provide any reassurances. With 80 percent of the population residing in villages and the state’s economy heavily reliant on rural areas, these elections are crucial,” he added.

CPIM state committee member and All India Krishak Sabha state unit Secretary Pabitra Kar affirmed the Left Front’s readiness for the elections.

“The Left Front candidates have begun filing their nomination papers with West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar. We will soon submit nominations for all the seats. Today, we are filing nominations for 35 Zila Parishad seats,” Kar stated.

The three-tier Panchayat elections are scheduled for August 8, with the counting of votes to take place on August 12.
