Agartala 20th July 2026: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) has alleged that a lack of police protection prevented it from carrying out a scheduled protest programme in Mohanpur on Monday.
Addressing a press conference at Bhanu Ghosh Smriti Bhavan, CPIM West Tripura District Committee Secretary Ratan Das claimed that the party had obtained prior permission from the Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) to organize a mass deputation to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) over various public issues.
According to Das, alleged BJP-backed miscreants began creating disturbances in several areas, including Gandhigram, Mohanpur and Tolabagan, from Sunday night in an attempt to disrupt the programme. He alleged that groups gathered at different locations and threatened party workers and supporters to prevent them from participating.
On Monday, CPIM workers and supporters assembled at Fatikchhara Bazaar before the programme. However, Das claimed that the rally was obstructed by a group of motorcycle-borne youths soon after it began. He further alleged that when Bamutia MLA Nayan Sarkar contacted the SDPO seeking intervention, the officer reportedly responded by asking the organizers to decide whether they wanted to proceed with the programme. Following the situation, the party decided to suspend the protest.
Das also alleged that CPIM worker Subhash Debnath was assaulted during the incident.
Strongly criticizing the police, Das accused them of failing to provide security despite granting permission for the programme. He alleged that the police acted in a “spineless manner” and questioned how they could ensure the safety of the public. He further accused the state’s Home Department of shielding miscreants and claimed that the democratic rights of opposition parties were being curtailed by the ruling party.
The press conference was also attended by Bamutia MLA Nayan Sarkar and other CPIM leaders.
