Agartala, 11th June 2025 : The CPIM East Agartala Local Committee met officials at the East Zonal Office of Ashram Chowmuhani Agartala Municipal Corporation today submitting a memorandum with a 10-point charter of demands aimed at addressing the recurring flood crisis in the city. The demands include financial assistance for flood victims, immediate sanitation efforts and the establishment of government-led health camps in affected areas.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, a CPIM leader emphasized the urgent need for intervention, citing the severe and frequent flooding in areas such as Dakshin Chandrapur, Chandrapur, Indranagar and Shibnagar. “Residents of these areas face floods once or more times each year. Their struggles need immediate resolution,” the leader stated.
The CPIM delegation also reminded the state government of its pre-election promise to prevent water accumulation in Agartala. Among their demands is a call for at least 15 days of guaranteed employment for displaced residents returning from relief camps, accelerated road repairs and enhanced navigability of the Howrah River and Katakhal.
Furthermore, the committee urged authorities to maintain continuous vigilance over the Katakhal embankment repairs and to proactively prepare for the upcoming monsoon season by deploying rescue teams, boats and drainage maintenance efforts. The delegation also pressed for immediate action to prevent illegal construction that exacerbates flood risks.
