Agartala, 25th June 2024: The CPIM in Tripura has raised concerns over the upcoming Panchayat polls, accusing BJP workers of creating a hostile environment through threats and intimidation.
In a letter to the Tripura State Election Commission, CPIM demanded a conducive atmosphere for elections and adequate deployment of paramilitary forces.
The opposition party alleged that BJP supporters were using tactics to disrupt the electoral process, similar to previous instances where they prevented opposition nominations, leading to BJP’s uncontested victories in over 90% of Panchayat seats in 2019.
CPIM claimed that their leaders and party offices were under attack by BJP-backed groups, while potential opposition candidates faced threats and intimidation. They urged the State Election Commissioner to ensure a fair electoral environment by allowing online nomination submissions and deploying sufficient paramilitary forces to safeguard candidates and enable a free campaign.
The CPIM emphasized the need for strict measures against any attempts to undermine democratic processes, urging immediate action to uphold the integrity of the upcoming Panchayat elections in Tripura.
