Agartala, 2nd August 2024: In a series of unexpected and violent events, the Gandacherra subdivision witnessed a tragic incident on July 7, leading to widespread unrest and destruction. The CPIM has called for a detailed investigation and enhanced security measures to address the aftermath.
On July 07 last, Parameshwar Reang was brutally murdered at Jagabandhu Para in Gandacherra subdivision. This incident triggered a chain of violent events, including arson, looting, and destruction of property. CPIM leaders, including state Secretary and leader of opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, state secretariat body members Naresh Jamatia and Sudhan Das and MLAs Sudip Sarkar, Nayan Sarkar and Ramu Das visited the affected areas on Thursday to assess the situation and offer support to the victims.
The CPIM delegation visited the home of Parameshwar Reang and spoke with his grieving family. They also toured various locations in Gandacherra where subsequent violent incidents occurred. During their visit, they interacted with affected residents and gathered firsthand accounts of the events.
At a press conference held at the CPIM State Head Office here on Friday, Jitendra Chaudhury expressed deep concern over the situation. He stated, “The incidents of arson and looting in Gandachara are unprecedented. People’s homes were broken into, looted, and then set on fire. Domestic animals were not spared, and 15 to 20 vehicles were destroyed. Shops were also vandalized and set ablaze.”
Chaudhury highlighted the dire conditions faced by those who have taken refuge in camps. “The affected people in the refugee camps have lost everything. Their homes have been burnt down, and they have been provided with only basic polythene sheets for shelter. Children and the elderly are falling ill due to inadequate living conditions,” he said.
The CPIM has put forth several demands to the administration: Ensure adequate security for the people in refugee camps to facilitate their safe return home; Provide sufficient food, clean drinking water, and other essential supplies to the displaced families; Properly assess the damages and provide compensation to the affected families. Facilitate low-interest loans to help them resume their lives, trade, and farming activities.
Chowdhury emphasized the urgency of these demands, stating, “The administration must act swiftly to address the needs of the affected families. They have not received any stipends or adequate support so far. It is imperative to provide them with everything necessary until they can return to their homes.”
The CPIM has condemned the violent incidents in Gandacherra and called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. The party continues to advocate for the rights and well-being of the affected families, urging the administration to take immediate and effective action.
