CPI(M) faces existential crisis at Kailashahar as 103 voters shift to Congress

Agartala, 13th December 2025:  . Kailashahar’s Srinathpur Gram Panchayat witnessed a political shift yesterday evening, as 103 voters from 33 families abandoned the CPI(M) to join the Congress. The development, led by former CPI(M) panchayat member Mujib Ali, has sparked widespread discussion in the local political circles.

The defection comes amid growing discontent among minority voters, who expressed frustration over CPI(M)’s decision to ally with the BJP in forming the panchayat. Residents allege that a handful of CPI(M) leaders compromised party ideals for personal gain, eroding the party’s credibility and weakening its organizational base in minority-dominated areas.

Speaking at the joining ceremony held at his residence, Mujib Ali declared: “The BJP is a communal party. CPI(M) has joined hands with them to form the panchayat, which we cannot accept. This alliance exposes CPI(M)’s own communal leanings. A few individuals have aligned with the BJP purely for self-interest. In the coming days, many more CPI(M) workers and supporters will join Congress.”

Ali also praised the developmental initiatives of Badruzzaman, Vice-Chairman of the Gouranagar Panchayat Samiti, highlighting his inclusive approach.

The event was attended by district Congress president and Gouranagar Panchayat Samiti Vice-Chairman Badruzzaman, Pradesh Congress Committee member Rudrendu Bhattacharya, Panisagar Block Congress president Bikash Bhattacharya, and other party leaders.

Addressing the gathering, Badruzzaman emphasized his commitment to development beyond party lines: “I do not discriminate in development work. Everyone is equal to me. Even the BJP member’s household in this panchayat received a tube well worth Rs 1.56 lakh. Several wards have benefited from projects worth lakhs. Together with our new members, we will work unitedly for the progress of this area.”

Political observers note that CPI(M)’s failure to provide strong leadership and empower youth leaders has accelerated its decline in Kailashahar’s minority regions. The Congress, they argue, is swiftly filling this vacuum, as evidenced by the mass defection in Srinathpur.
