Agartala, 30th June 2024: Principal opposition party, CPIM, has called for immediate action against BJP workers for alleged threats against opposition candidates. In a letter to State Election Commissioner (SEC) Saradindu Chowdhury, CPIM state committee secretary Jitendra Chaudhury detailed an incident on June 29 where a convoy of 10-12 vehicles, led by BJP leader Subrata Rudrapaul, toured several villages in the North District, including Sakaibari, Baruakandi, Chandrapur, and Raghna. The convoy reportedly used a public address system to threaten violence against anyone contesting the Panchayat elections under a CPIM or Congress ticket.
Chaudhury condemned the threats, describing them as an unprecedented assault on democratic processes in India. He expressed frustration over the lack of preventive action by the police or administrative authorities, noting that the incident validated concerns previously raised by CPIM representatives in a meeting with the SEC on June 24. Chaudhury asserted that such threats undermine the authority and independence of the SEC.
Highlighting the ruling party’s responsibility to ensure free and fair elections, Chaudhury criticized the BJP for obstructing democratic processes in the state. He urged the SEC to exercise his independent authority to ensure a fair election. Chaudhury also demanded that the SEC instruct police to arrest Subrata Rudrapaul and his followers, initiate legal action against them, and seize the vehicles involved in the convoy, with legal prosecution for their owners.
