Agartala, 17th October 2024:   Three Special Police Officers (SPOs) and one Sub-Inspector of Tripura Police have been suspended from service after they allegedly beat a man inside the lockup last Monday, who later died while undergoing treatment at Manubazar.

According to reports, the deceased, Badal Tripura (38), a resident of Bipinchandra Para, Kaladhe, and another young man, Chiranjit Tripura, were arrested last Sunday in connection with the theft of rubber and brought to the Manubazar police station.

Sources indicate that police personnel from the Manubazar Police Station beat both men on the same night, severely injuring Badal Tripura.

On Monday, Monindra Tripura was called to the police station with an Aadhaar card to bail them out. Accordingly, Monindra Tripura and Jubaraj Tripura arrived at Manubazar Police Station and observed multiple injury marks on Badal Tripura’s body. They spoke with Badal Tripura, who confirmed that he had been severely beaten by the police the previous night, leaving both his eyes seriously injured.

Badal Tripura was initially treated at Manubazar Hospital but was later referred to Shantirbazar District Hospital for better treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

South District Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar Sinha, and Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Nityananda Sarkar, rushed to Manubazar at night to investigate the incident.

“When they reviewed the CCTV footage of the police station, it showed that Badal Tripura had been severely beaten by three SPO personnel—Shyamal Das, Thailasa Mog, and Rengo Mog—along with Sub-Inspector Premjit Roy,” according to sources.

This morning, family members of the deceased staged a protest with the body, demanding strict action against the police personnel involved.
