Agartala, 14th May 2025: Oil India Limited has marked a historic milestone in Tripura’s energy sector with the commencement of drilling operations at Debtamura in Gomati district—making it the first hydrocarbon exploration well ever drilled in the state.
In a statement shared on X, Oil India confirmed that it began exploration and production activities in Tripura on May 11 by spudding the well named Debtamura#1.
“This is a significant breakthrough for Tripura under the Government of India’s Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP). Debtamura#1 is the first well being drilled in the state under the HELP regime,” the company said.
The well site is located about 120 km from Agartala, within the Baramura-Debtamura Reserve Forest in Gomati district, close to the Indo-Bangladesh international border.
Oil India highlighted the formidable challenges faced during the project’s early phases. These included treacherous and thickly forested terrain, difficult surface logistics due to narrow, hilly roads with sharp bends, prolonged monsoon seasons triggering severe floods, and frequent landslides caused by unstable younger sediments. These factors repeatedly damaged well foundations and access roads, delaying progress.”Despite these obstacles, the unwavering commitment of Oil India’s team reflects our collective resolve towards achieving the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” the statement added.
