Agartala, 12th May 2025: Tensions flared once again along the India-Bangladesh international border as Border Security Force (BSF) personnel came under attack by smugglers in the Devipur border area of Rangauti Gram Panchayat. The incident took place late last night.
Sources informed that the BSF personnel spotted individuals engaged in illegal cross-border activities and attempted to intervene. However, the smugglers retaliated leading to a violent confrontation. A brief exchange of fire ensued before the smugglers fled the scene unable to withstand BSF’s pursuit.
The confrontation took place in Ward No. 5 of Rangauti Gram Panchayat, where tensions have been mounting. Local residents allege that following the skirmish, BSF personnel mistook Sadeq Ali’s family members for smugglers as they stepped outside upon hearing the commotion. In a tragic turn of events, the family claims BSF personnel resorted to force, allegedly attacking them and detonating an explosive.
“We heard the commotion and stepped outside. Suddenly, there was chaos, and my daughter-in-law was injured. She was hit with a gun butt,” said a family member of Sadeq Ali, speaking in condition of anonymity.
Emergency response teams, including fire department personnel, swiftly arrived at the scene. The injured woman was transported to Unakoti District Hospital in Bhagwan Nagar for medical treatment.
The incident has intensified concerns over border security. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack. Meanwhile, security analysts warn that recurrent smuggling operations and violent altercations raise serious questions about the efficacy of current security policies.
“Smugglers have grown bolder, and these attacks on security forces indicate the urgent need for stronger enforcement and local coordination,” commented a security expert familiar with cross-border operations.
Residents have called for stricter surveillance and a collaborative effort between BSF and local authorities to curb illicit trade along the border. The situation remains volatile, and further developments are anticipated.
