Devotees allege harassment by police at Matabari shrine

Date:

Agartala, 18th May 2026:   A major controversy has erupted in Udaipur following serious allegations of police misconduct at the historic Tripura Sundari Temple, popularly known as Matabari. Devotees have accused two on-duty police personnel, an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Constable of repeatedly behaving in a discourteous and humiliating manner toward visitors over an extended period.

According to multiple complaints, pilgrims arriving from both within the state and other parts of the country have faced harassment while attempting to offer prayers at the revered shrine. Devotees claim that despite the temple witnessing a daily influx of thousands seeking blessings of the Mother Goddess, the conduct of certain police officials has created distress and mental anguish among visitors.

Local residents have expressed deep concern over the situation, noting that the Tripura Sundari Temple is one of the most prominent religious tourism destinations in the region and holds national significance. With both the State and Central governments undertaking initiatives to promote the temple on an international platform, many fear that such incidents could tarnish its image and disrupt the sanctity of the religious environment.

Despite the growing discontent, no official statement has yet been issued by the administration or the police authorities regarding the allegations. Meanwhile, devotees and members of the local community have called for a thorough and impartial investigation to ascertain the truth and ensure accountability.
