Agartala, 22nd October 2026 : The Tripura Police have arrested two persons identified as Bijan Das and Rahul Das in the suspected double murder of two brothers, Shubhadip Roy Chowdhury and Joydeep Roy Chowdhury, whose bodies were recovered from the Boruakandi area of North Tripura on Monday night, October 19.
North Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) IPS Avinash Rai confirmed the arrest, stating that the accused was taken into custody after being discharged from Dharmanagar District Hospital on Wednesday. He is scheduled to be produced before the court.
According to police sources, Dharmanagar Police Station registered Case No. 89 under Sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3/5, based on a written complaint lodged by the victims’ father, Samiran Roy Chowdhury. The complaint named Bijan Das, a resident of Boruakandi, and other unidentified persons allegedly involved in the incident.
According to the complaint, the incident stemmed from a dispute over a financial transaction. Bijan Das allegedly claimed that Bibek Bardhan owed him Rs 16,000, triggering a confrontation in the Boruakandi area.
The dispute reportedly escalated on Sunday night, October 18, near the highway adjoining Badsha Tilla and the Deowanpasha Agrani Sangha area. Bijan Das allegedly threatened Bibek Bardhan with a knife and prevented him from leaving the spot. Joydeep Roy Chowdhury, who was reportedly present, intervened in an attempt to resolve the dispute and informed Bibek’s family members about the alleged assault.
Bibek was subsequently rescued by his family and local residents. However, the confrontation reportedly continued, and the two Roy Chowdhury brothers allegedly came under threat while attempting to settle the matter.
The complaint further alleged that the brothers received several threatening phone calls from Monday morning, October 19.
Later that day, the younger brother, Shubhadip, reportedly went to a Durga Puja venue in the Boruakandi area. According to the allegations, Bijan Das confronted him at the venue and slapped him, leading to another altercation. Bijan Das allegedly attacked Shubhadip with a knife, leaving him critically injured.
Shubhadip reportedly managed to call his elder brother, Joydeep, and inform him that he had been attacked. Joydeep rushed to the spot in an attempt to rescue his younger brother but was allegedly attacked as well.
Both brothers died in the incident, according to their family. Their bodies were recovered from the Boruakandi area at approximately 9:30 pm on Monday.
The complaint also alleged that Bijan Das, son of Randhir Chandra Das of Boruakandi, had threatened to kill the brothers.
Police reportedly launched a detailed investigation after receiving the written complaint. Bijan Das had sustained minor injuries and was undergoing treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital.
According to the police, he could not be formally arrested while receiving hospital treatment under the circumstances described by the authorities. He was therefore kept under close surveillance to prevent him from escaping.
Following his discharge from the hospital on Wednesday, police arrested him in connection with the case. He is expected to be produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
The investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine whether other individuals were involved in the alleged crime.
