Agartala, November 11: The Dharmanagar Municipal Council has taken an initiative to support the self-help groups of women by organizing a Diwali mela in the city, where they can sell their handmade candles and lamps. The mela, which has been going on for several years, aims to provide a source of income and empowerment for the women who make their own products.

Pradyut De Sarkar, the chairman of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council, told reporters that there are three stalls in the mela, where around 1600 to 2000 women from different self-help groups display their candles and lamps. He said that the Municipal Council has set a target of selling products worth Rs 25 lakh this year. He urged the people of all religions in the city to buy these products and improve the financial and social condition of the women.

The stalls are colourfully decorated and attract many customers who want to buy the candles and lamps for Diwali. The chairman also appealed to the people to reject the Chinese lamps available in the market and support the local for vocal ethos. He said that the candles and lamps made by the self-help groups will brighten up the homes and shops of the people and spread the joy of Diwali in Dharmanagar.
